I am writing to you regarding Redmond’s Old Firehouse Teen Center.
The Firehouse is a culturally historic space vital for local youth engagement and development, and its closure would severely impact our community's resources for teens.
Teens who live in abusive homes, struggle with academics, feel isolated, and are unable to be their true selves without fear of rejection knew the Firehouse was a safe place for them to be themselves, connect with other teens in similar situations, and find the resources and services they need.
I hope the City of Redmond will honor its own values and not only keep the Firehouse as is but to reopen it immediately.
Thank you
Why it’s important.
We’re dedicated to preserving the Old Firehouse (OFH) Teen Center, a vital and safe space for teens and a culturally historic part of Redmond and the PNW music scene for 30 years.
In March 2025, the City of Redmond closed the OFH and ended all teen services permanently, citing the building’s age and safety despite stating it’s safe to occupy.
Rumors suggest the Mayor and Parks and Recreation Director want to demolish the historic building and sell the land for more apartments.
The OFH was the only truly safe, accessible, and welcoming place for local neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, and at-risk youth.
We’re fighting to preserve the building as it is and immediately reopen and restore the vital teen services and programs.
The building has stood as the heart and soul of Redmond for 75 years. Built in 1950 when the city’s population was only around 570. 75 community members volunteered their time, money, and materials to build the Old Firehouse to act as the city’s very first City Hall, Fire Station, Police Station, and Jail. Mayor at the time, Rosemarie Ives, along with others, recognized the importance of providing teen services to the community and herself when the 90s arrived. They started the Old Firehouse Teen Center.
Since then, many world-renowned bands got their start at the Old Firehouse Teen Center, two of which being Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie.
